WHERE THERE’S VISION, THERE’S LIFE!

I have learned something over the years: If I cannot envision something happening, it will NEVER become a reality for me. If I cannot see myself performing some action, or just being myself without compromising who I am, I know that the situation will not bear fruit. I remember one day while I was sitting in a class at graduate school. I was thoroughly engaged in learning about systems and how they relate to human behavior, when an image suddenly flashed in my mind and I saw myself teaching the class, and I said to myself, “I will teach!”

While I had taught young children and had a degree in art education, I saw myself teaching the concepts that were fundamentally changing my life. Knowledge and understanding about why I and my family as well as others behaved the way we did, was of such an earth-shaking magnitude that the excitement in my heart could hardly be controlled. The vision caused a burst of light in my soul, and I knew that the excitement could bear fruit.

A year later I received a call from the film school where my ex-husband had taught. The woman on the other end had a question, “Would you be interested in teaching psychology?” she asked. “Yes!” I burst out. And the vision that I had seen became a reality. The vision of me teaching and the words, I will teach, became a declaration. Job 22:28 says:

You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; so light will shine on your ways.

The vision came; I declared words to support the vision, and I fought the fears that told me I could never succeed. I had never been able to speak in front of people without stumbling over my words and becoming flushed and forgetting what I wanted to say. But I searched the Word for a promise, and “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13 NKJV) became my mantra.

To go forward in life, goals (or pictures) of where we want to see ourselves in the future are essential, for “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). However, people live according to stories in their head, and sometimes those stories are not of success, but rather of failure. People tend to retain memories of failures more than those of success, as well as words of judgment more than words of praise. Searching our memories for exceptions to our stories, however, can provide the courage to push forward.

When I was faced with only memories of failure when being in front of people, I searched and searched until I remembered dancing on stage with my sister when I was six years old. And while it had not required me to speak, I had one vision of me succeeding in front of people on stage. That became a source of strength—knowing that I had it within me not to crumble. Habakkuk 2:2-3 declares a truth:

Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
